    It is crucial not to underestimate your surroundings, for every place embraces a story. My story unfolds two years ago during a perfect day in late summer of 2007, a day to witness the beauty of Gettysburg College at its prime. Merely a skittish freshman, I remember walking hurriedly to my first Astronomy class in Masters Hall while simultaneously attempting to soak in the pristine condition of the surrounding brick buildings and picturesque landscape. I could not help but feel intimidated by the upperclassmen, already accustomed to the Gettysburg lifestyle. Quickening my pace, I finally reached Masters Hall and paused before the massive, elaborate brick structure just before its entrance. The fountain was not operating and I remember wondering why and what it would look like if it were. As I moved closer and peered inside, soapsuds blanketed the water‟s surface. It was a humbling moment for me, the perfect welcome to my Gettysburg College experience. It was one that made me realize that aside from the serious education I knew that would undoubtedly receive, it was not quite time to grow up. As a person with a valued appreciation for aesthetics, the sights and sounds of the Masters fountain have always provided tranquility, even in the most stressful situations. Whether it is the scene for a harmless prank, the location of a midnight swim (for all of the doubters, one of my sorority sisters has in fact jumped into the fountain), a place to meet, or simply an object of visual appeal, the Master‟s fountain is an essential landmark on the Gettysburg campus.     Worth, age, and social status in early modern England

    This article introduces a new source for assessing the distribution of wealth in early modern England derived from witness depositions taken by the church courts. It discusses the accuracy of statements of ‘worth’ provided by thousands of witnesses between the mid-sixteenth and later seventeenth centuries, and uses the monetary estimates of worth in goods that the majority of deponents supplied to assess the changing distribution of personal wealth. We argue that this data supports recent claims that the pre-industrial English economy experienced significant levels of economic growth, while showing that its benefits were increasingly unevenly distributed between different social groups. In particular, the century after 1550 witnessed spectacular increases in yeoman worth that outstripped inflation by a factor of 10. The relative wealth of yeomen was also underpinned by its more secure distribution over the life cycle which further compounded the differences between them and other social groups

    This ultralightweight solar array system is applied to three generic mission types: (1) interplanetary, (2) geosynchronous, and (3) manned space station. The requirements of each of these missions, as they pertain to the solar array, are presented. Existing lightweight solar array system concepts are reviewed, along with conclusions regarding the applicability of this technology to the feasibility of the ultralightweight solar array system. Several system concepts are included for further evaluation. The existing technology base, as it pertains to solar cells, solar cell covers, interconnects and substrates, and deployable booms, is reviewed.     Dynamic response for thermal control and measurement and fast radiation thermometry

    A preliminary evaluation was made by ORNL of a two-color ratio pyrometer (TCRP) for temperature control in the Modular Electromagnetic Levitation (MEL) experiment. A discussion was presented by Eric Spjut at the 1987 NASA Non-Contact Temperature Measurement Workshop (NASA Conf. Publ. 2503, pp. 182-213) in which he described the non-linear characteristics of the time response of TCPs. Researchers replicated his model and results and note that the non-linear response behavior is minimized for small temperature steps at high temperatures. They then used the predicted response in a model for a proportional or integral feedback controller and predicted the control characteristics for heating and cooling a 5-mm diameter sphere of niobium at high (1500 to 2750 K) temperatures. The analysis shows that for a slow (25-ms) time response for a commercial RCRP, overshoots of several hundred kelvins will result from a 100-K decrease in the setpoint, and temperature tracking errors of 14 to 45 K will occur for control temperature ramps of 1000K/s. For a fast (greater than 0.1 ms) time response, the overshoot and ramp response errors are largely eliminated

    Efficient placement of structural dynamics sensors on the space station

    System identification of the space station dynamic model will require flight data from a finite number of judiciously placed sensors on it. The placement of structural dynamics sensors on the space station is a particularly challenging problem because the station will not be deployed in a single mission. Given that the build-up sequence and the final configuration for the space station are currently undetermined, a procedure for sensor placement was developed using the assembly flights 1 to 7 of the rephased dual keel space station as an example. The procedure presented approaches the problem of placing the sensors from an engineering, as opposed to a mathematical, point of view. In addition to locating a finite number of sensors, the procedure addresses the issues of unobserved structural modes, dominant structural modes, and the trade-offs involved in sensor placement for space station. This procedure for sensor placement will be applied to revised, and potentially more detailed, finite element models of the space station configuration and assembly sequence

    A multivariate model of the effect of population on local fiscal behavior, assessed value of property and average single family home values is estimated using cross-sectional data from Oregon. Regression results suggest that property tax levies are unit elastic with respect to population, that the total assessed value of property increases less than proportionally with population, and that the average value of a single family home increases with population. These results imply a positive relationship between population and both property tax rates and the tax bill of the average single family homeowner.     This study reviews facility capabilities of NASA, Ames Research Center to simulate hypersonic flight with particular emphasis on arc heaters. Scaling laws are developed and compared with ARCFLO II calculations and with existing data. The calculations indicate that a 300 MW, 100 atmosphere arc heater is feasible. Recommendations for the arc heater, which will operate at voltages up to 50 kilovolts, and the associated elements needed for a test facility are included
